How a musical dynasty achieved three generations of number one records
In short: In the early 1990s, twin brothers Matthew and Gunnar Nelson dominated the charts. But their path to fame was paved by a unique family legacy, a sudden musical epiphany, and a relentless pursuit of a record deal that nearly ended in frustration.
The Nelson brothers, born September 20, 1967, carry a rare distinction in the Guinness Book of World Records: they are part of the only family to reach number one record status across three successive generations, a lineage beginning with their grandparents, Ozermond and Harriet Nelson. This musical heritage was deeply personal; the twins, sons of Rick and Kristin Nelson, even perform a tribute act called Ricky Nelson Remembered.
Their rise to stardom was not instantaneous. Originally performing as The Nelsons in the Los Angeles club scene, the duo experienced a pivotal moment following a Saturday Night Live appearance—the first for an unsigned band. During the trip home, Gunnar experienced an epiphany: rather than remaining a drummer in a band, he would learn guitar so the brothers could share the front stage together. This shift led to their signing with Geffen Records after a year of monthly meetings with executive John Kalodner, following an acoustic performance of '(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection'.
While their 1990 debut, After the Rain, was a massive success—selling over 3,000,000 copies and reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100—the following years brought industry shifts. The rise of grunge and alternative rock, alongside conflicts with Geffen over the darker direction of their album Imaginator, eventually led to their departure from the label in 1995. Since then, the brothers have maintained independence through their own label, Stone Canyon Records, navigating various musical experiments from country to Christmas albums.
