In short: In 1951, Norm Van Brocklin set an NFL passing record that would remain unbroken for 75 years. Known as 'the Dutchman' and 'Stormin' Norman,' he was a fierce competitor whose career spanned championship glory, coaching volatility, and a legendary rivalry with a future Hall of Fame protege.

Norm Van Brocklelin’s playing career was defined by both dominance and shared glory. During his early years with the Los Angeles Rams, he and teammate Bob Waterfield often alternated as starting quarterbacks. This era of high-octane offense culminated in a 1951 championship victory, where Van Brocklin delivered a decisive 73-yard touchdown pass to receiver Tom Fears. His individual brilliance was cemented on September 28, 1951, when he threw for 554 yards against the Cleveland Browns, shattering the previous single-game record of 468 yards.

As a player, Van Brocklin was a prolific force, leading the league in passing three times and retiring as the all-time leader in punts with 523. His transition to the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958 brought him even more hardware; he earned the NFL MVP award in 1960 and led the Eagles to a championship victory over the Green Bay Packers. However, his temperament—noted for incidents like throwing change at an official—often made him a polarizing figure.

His coaching career was equally intense. As the inaugural head coach of the Minnesota Vikings (1961–196rypt6), he discovered Fran Tarkenton, though the two clashed due to Van Brocklin's preference for pocket passing over Tarkenton's scrambling style. While he achieved winning seasons for both the Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons, his coaching tenure was marked by friction, eventually leading to his resignation in 1967. He passed away in 1983 at the age of 57, just weeks after his former teammate, Bob Waterfield.
