The quarterback who held a record for 14 years
In short: Before Brett Favre became a household name, Ron Jaworski was the standard for endurance. His career was defined by a grueling decade in Philadelphia, where he navigated injuries and coaching shifts to lead his team to its first Super Bowl appearance.
Ron Jaworski's journey to the NFL began at Youngstown State University, where he was known as "Rifle Ron" for his pass-oriented style. Rather than accepting a professional baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, he opted for university football. He established various collegiate benchmarks, such as reaching 2,123 passing yards during one year. He was eventually drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1973, spending four seasons primarily as a backup before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 1977.
Jaworski became a cornerstone of the Eagles during a transformative era. Under coach Dick Vermeil, he led the team to four consecutive playoff appearances between 1978 and 1981. His 1980 season remains a career highlight: he threw for 3,529 yards and 27 touchdowns, earning the Bert Bell Award and the NFC Offensive Player of the Year honors. This period culminated in the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance in 1980, though the team ultimately fell to the Oakland Raiders.
The physical toll of his career is underscored by a significant milestone. In 1984, Jaworski suffered a broken left leg against his former team, the Rams, ending a streak of 116 consecutive starts. This was an NFL record for quarterbacks at the time, standing for 14 years until it was broken by Brett Favre in 1999. Despite various injuries and being benched for successors like Randall Cunningham, Jaworski retired in 1990 with 28,190 passing yards and 179 touchdowns.
