In short: Since its 1894 inception, the North Dakota football program has navigated radical transformations. From the dominance of Jack West to a 2001 national championship, the program has evolved through multiple conferences and divisions to compete at the highest collegiate level.

The program's trajectory was fundamentally altered in 1928 when Charles A. "Jack" West arrived in Grand Forks. West, who previously secured three North Central Conference titles at South Dakota State, transformed the team into a national force. During his 15-season tenure, he amassed an 89–35–6 record and won eight conference championships, remaining the university's winningest coach for 57 years. During his first four seasons at the helm, West secured immediate success by winning multiple conference titles. He also coached the team during the war years, though the university did not field a squad in 1943 or 1944.

The mid-century era saw significant shifts under Marv "Whitey" Helling, who arrived in 1957. Helling's tenure included three North Central Conference titles and a 1966 victory in the Pecan Bowl, which was broadcast as the NCAA's "Game of the Week." This success was followed by the Jerry Olson era, highlighted by a 1972 season where the team averaged a victory margin of over 27 points and secured a major upset against Cal Poly in the Camellia Bowl. The program's peak occurred between 1964 and 1966, a period that included two bowl appearances. This era also saw the team defeat Northern Illinois in the Mineral Water Bowl.

The program's modern era is defined by its transition to Division I. After competing in the NCAA's College Division and Division II—winning a national championship in 2001—the school upgraded all athletic programs in 2008. This move involved a period of postseason ineligibility from 2008 to 2011. Today, the Fighting Hawks compete in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, representing the culmination of over a century of athletic evolution. Before joining the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2020, the school spent time in the Big Sky and the Great West Conference. The program's most recent postseason appearance occurred in 2023.
