From bottom-dwellers to silverware: the rise of NorthEast United FC
In short: In 2014, NorthEast United FC entered the Indian Super League and finished in last place. A decade later, they have transformed into a powerhouse, securing their first major trophy and recording the largest victory in the league's history. This is a masterclass in sporting evolution.
Founded on April 13, 2014, NorthEast United FC was established to represent the eight states of Northeast India. The franchise was born from a bidding process involving the All India Football Federation and IMG-Reliance. While the club initially struggled—finishing at the bottom of the table in its inaugural season—it quickly sought to establish credibility by signing high-profile talent like Spanish defender Joan Capdevila and New Zealander Ricki Herbert.
The club's journey was marked by significant volatility in leadership and performance. It took until the 2018–19 season for the team to become a major force, qualifying for the playoffs and setting a club record of 29 points. However, the club faced a 'dismantling' period shortly after, losing key figures like coach Eelco Schatorrie and top scorer Bartholomew Ogbeche to rivals. It wasn't until the appointment of Juan Pedro Benali in May 2023 that the team entered a new era of stability and success.
The ultimate turning point arrived in late 2024. On August 31, 2024, the club clinched its first piece of silverware, the Durand Cup, by defeating Mohun Bagan SG in a penalty shootout. On 26 October 2024, the club achieved an unprecedented 5–0 triumph against Jamshedpur FC, marking their most substantial ISL win. By the 2025 Durand Cup, the club demonstrated unprecedented depth, becoming the first team in over 30 years to defend the trophy after a 6–1 final victory featuring six different goalscorers.
