In short: Long before it became a bastion of Christianity, Nubia was a formidable civilization that controlled trade routes across Northeast Africa. Its unique political structure centered on the power of queens, who legitimized kings and eventually ruled as sovereign monarchs, even successfully halting the advance of the Roman army.

Located between modern Egypt and Sudan, the region known as Nubia—a term emerging in medieval Europe—was home to powerful empires stretching 1750 miles. While ancient Egyptian texts referred to the area as Kush or Ta-Sety, the Nubians developed a distinct culture that thrived on trade, connecting the Mediterranean and Arabia to the heart of Africa. They were masters of luxury goods, exporting gold, ivory, and semi-precious stones while constructing massive pyramids, temples, and intricate rock art.

Nubian governance was remarkably different from its contemporaries. During the Napatan period, from the eighth to the third centuries BCE, the legitimacy of a king depended entirely on the queen. Inheritance did not follow the eldest son; instead, the king’s mother selected the successor, often the sister’s son. This matrilineal focus meant that women were central to the state's continuity. Over time, this evolved into a system where women ruled as kings in their own right, using the title kandake to assert their authority.

The civilization was also a linguistic melting pot. While early rulers adopted Egyptian hieroglyphs for monumental inscriptions, they eventually developed their own writing systems. During the Meroitic period, they began recording their own language using Demotic Egyptian script and hieroglyphs. By the Late Antique period, they transitioned to Old Nubian, written in a script derived from Greek and Coptic. This cultural adaptability allowed Nubia to maintain its identity, eventually becoming one of the earliest Christian realms, a faith it defended against external expansion for centuries.
