How Ona Judge escaped George Washington during a presidential dinner
In short: While George and Martha Washington sat down for dinner in Philadelphia, one woman was planning a different kind of departure. Ona Judge slipped out of the President’s mansion, choosing a life as a fugitive to ensure she would never be returned to the bondage of Virginia.
During May 1796, the Washingtons shared a meal in Philadelphia, one of their last before heading back to Mount Vernon for summer. While the President ate, Ona Judge fled the mansion, escaping to find her liberty. Her decision was driven by a terrifying certainty: she knew that if she returned to Virginia, she would never secure her liberty.
Judge’s journey was one of immense risk. Heading north, she obtained a spot on a vessel destined for Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She avoided being caught, even though George Washington tried relentlessly to locate her. She remained a free woman for the rest of her life, eventually passing away in 1848.
Because no likeness of Judge survives today, our understanding of her appearance relies on a single runaway advertisement. The description characterizes her as a slender, middle-stature woman of about 20 years old, described as a 'light mulatto girl' with freckles, black eyes, and bushy black hair. Her story provides a rare, harrowing glimpse into the lives of fugitives in the early United States.
Judge's defiance stands in stark contrast to the private contradictions of the nation's first commander in chief. While Washington privately questioned the institution of slavery, he continued to own 123 men, women, and children. Judge’s legacy was recently honored by the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire through a mural in Portsmouth, depicting her arrival on the city's waterfront.
