In short: Discovered in 2019, the diaries of Oberleutnant Wilhelm Sander offer a firsthand account of Operation Barbarossa. This video explores the Eastern Front through the eyes of a politicized Panzer officer, documenting the transition from initial German confidence to the traumatic, unforgiving reality of a war that would eventually turn him into a pacifist.

Operation Barbarossa, launched on June 22, 1941, was the largest invasion in military history, involving approximately three million men and 3,000 German tanks. While Hitler and his high command expected a swift victory within months, the campaign stalled as the Russian weather turned and Soviet reserves proved far larger than German intelligence had estimated. The diaries of Wilhelm Sander, an officer in the 11th Panzer-Regiment, provide a brutally honest record of this descent into a catastrophic conflict.

The narrative follows Sander from the summer of 1941 through the brutal winter of 1941/1942. Beyond the military struggle to capture Moscow, the diaries expose the violence directed toward civilian populations during German retreats—actions that reportedly shook even dedicated National Socialist soldiers. These accounts serve as a stark reflection on the trauma of the Eastern Front, illustrating how the reality of the war shattered the ideological convictions of those who fought in it.
