In short: This video examines the German offensive known as Operation Beach Party, or Strandfest, launched at the Yser River. It details the introduction of new chemical weapons, including blue cross gas and the debut of mustard gas, during a period when British Commander Sir Douglas Haig was planning his own offensive in Flanders.

In the summer of 1917, British Commander Sir Douglas Haig remained committed to a planned offensive in Flanders. Anticipating this move, German forces launched a preemptive spoiling attack at the Yser River, codenamed Operation Beach Party (Strandfest).

The operation is historically significant for the tactical deployment of new chemical agents. German forces utilized blue cross gas for the first time during the initial assault. Two days later, they introduced another chemical agent that would become infamously known as mustard gas, marking a grim escalation in the technological warfare of the First World War.
