In short: Founded in 2011 as a niche sports blog, OutKick evolved from an independent venture into a significant conservative media brand. Acquired by Fox Corporation in 2021, the platform transformed its operations and reach, eventually integrating fully into the Fox News Digital division while navigating internal leadership shifts and rapid expansion.

Clay Travis launched the site in 2011 under the name OutKick the Coverage. Initially focused on sports commentary, the platform quickly established a reputation for its conservative perspective on popular culture and athletics. By 2013, the site had secured a licensing agreement with Fox Sports, leading to increased visibility through cross-promotion and syndication. This relationship deepened in 2015 when Travis signed an overall deal with Fox Sports, eventually bringing his radio show to the network in 2016.

The company underwent significant structural changes in 2020 when Jason Whitlock joined as a partner, leading to a rebranding as simply OutKick. However, internal friction regarding equity and investment led to Whitlock's departure in early 2021. Shortly thereafter, Fox Corporation acquired OutKick Media. The acquisition catalyzed massive growth, with the staff expanding from 10 employees to over 50 by 2023. The platform moved into a larger Nashville office and began distributing video content across Fox Nation, alongside hiring new personalities like Tomi Lahren.

By 2026, the site entered a new phase of integration, moving directly under the Fox News Digital division. Clay Travis stepped down as head of the site that June, though he remained a contributor and host. This transition included the launch of new content verticals, such as OutKick Outdoors and professional wrestling coverage. Following his departure from the site's leadership, Travis launched a new venture called Sport & State. Today, OutKick continues to position itself as a conservative alternative to mainstream sports media, frequently challenging what it characterizes as left-leaning bias in sports reporting.
