In short: Born from a secret romance between Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Go's and Terry Hall of the Specials, this upbeat anthem became an unlikely 1981 hit. Financed by leftover funds from a Police video shoot, its carefree music video helped define the aesthetic of the fledgling MTV era.

The song originated from a short-lived relationship between Jane Wiedlin and Terry Hall during the Go-Go's 1980 tour of England. After Wiedlin returned to the United States, Hall sent her lyrics by mail, sparking a collaboration that resulted in one of the most recognizable pop tracks of the decade. While the Go-Go's version on their 1981 album Beauty and the Beat is celebrated for its infectious, upbeat energy, Hall later recorded a gloomier, slower interpretation with his band Fun Boy Three in 1983.

The iconic music video was a product of necessity and youthful rebellion. Directed by Derek Burbidge, the shoot was financed using surplus money from a video budget belonging to the band the Police. The Go-Go's were initially reluctant to film, but the resulting footage—featuring the band driving a 1960 Buick LeSabre through Beverly Hills and jumping into the Electric Fountain—captured a spontaneous, innocent charm. This aesthetic resonated deeply with early MTV audiences, securing the song's place in pop culture history.

Beyond its initial success, the song has enjoyed remarkable longevity. It spent 30 weeks on the Billboard charts and has been recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest pop songs of all time. Its influence has spanned generations, appearing in the 2018 Broadway musical Head over Heels and receiving a 2004 cover by Hilary and Haylie Duff. Whether interpreted as a song about discretion or, as one film character jokingly suggested, a meditation on virginity, the track remains a staple of the new wave era.
