A musical tribute to the Parthenon sculptures performed within the British Museum
In short: Experience a unique musical interpretation of the Parthenon frieze. This video captures the UK premiere of Panathenaia, a cantata composed to honor the artistry of the ancient carvings housed in the British Museum's Room 18.
Composed by Thomas Hewitt Jones with lyrics by Paul Williamson, the cantata Panathenaia was performed in the Parthenon Gallery on June 4, 2015. The event drew an audience of more than 300 people and featured the Arensky Chamber Orchestra alongside the O/Modernt Kammerorkester, conducted by William Kunhardt.
The work is structured into eight distinct movements, ranging from instrumental preludes to vocal performances by soprano Paulina Pfeiffer and mezzo-soprano Karolina Blixt. The composition integrates elements like the electric harpsichord, played by Christine Stevenson, to narrate the stories embedded within the gallery's timeless stones.
