Did a poetess really save the city of Argos from a Spartan invasion?

Telesilla of Argos, the Greek Lyric Poetess who defeated Sparta · 7:09 · Video: World History Encyclopedia · Watch at the source

In short: Telesilla of Argos was a celebrated lyric poet in the fifth century BCE. Beyond her verses, she is remembered for leading the defense of her city against the Spartan king Cleomenes I. This video explores her dual legacy as both a talented artist and a courageous military leader.

Telesilla is counted among the Nine Female Lyric Poets of Greece, alongside Sappho. While only two lines of her poetry survive, her historical reputation rests heavily on her role in the defense of Argos. According to Plutarch, after the Argive army fell to Cleomenes I, Telesilla mobilized the city's women, youth, and elders to man the walls and repel the invaders.

Accounts of the conflict vary. One version suggests the women successfully drove the Spartans back. Another, provided by Pausanias, claims Cleomenes withdrew because he faced a lose-lose situation: defeat by women would be a disgrace, while victory over them would be dishonorable. Whether through direct combat or strategic withdrawal, Telesilla remains a legendary figure in Argive history.
