How a mortician’s real-life expertise created wrestling’s most haunting supernatural legend
In short: Before he was the high-pitched, urn-bearing Paul Bearer, William Moody was a certified embalmer. By blending his professional training in mortuary science with a ghostly persona, he transformed the World Wrestling Federation's most iconic characters into a saga of family secrets and supernatural power.
Born in Mobile, Alabama, in 1954, William Alvin Moody began his wrestling journey as a teenage ringside photographer before serving four years in the U.S. Air Force. After his military service, Moody pursued a degree in mortuary science, becoming a certified mortician and embalmer. This real-world expertise became the foundation for his most famous character, Paul Bearer, a name inspired by the term 'pallbearer.'
Joining the WWF in late 1990, Moody utilized his funeral industry background to craft a histrionic, ghostly manager. He was almost always accompanied by a mysterious urn, which he claimed provided 'the power of the urn' to his primary protégé, The Undertaker. The character's lore was deeply intertwined with the funeral industry, featuring a talk show segment called 'The Funeral Parlor' and storylines involving caskets and supernatural strength.
The complexity of the character deepened through intricate, often dark, storylines. In 1997, Moody’s character revealed a traumatic past involving an arson murder at a family funeral home, alleging that The Undertaker had burned down the establishment and killed his parents. This period also introduced the character of Kane, revealed to be the storyline half-brother of The Undertaker and the biological son of Paul Bearer.
Despite the macabre nature of his persona, Moody’s career was marked by significant real-life shifts. He transitioned from the ghostly, pale-faced Bearer to a more natural, loudmouthed manager after suffering storyline facial burns from a fireball. Beyond the ring, Moody navigated significant health challenges, including gastric bypass surgery in 2003, which even influenced his temporary absence from television due to complications like gallstones.
