In short: In 1998, The Undertaker launched a dark, pseudo-witchcraft stable that terrorized the World Wrestling Federation. What began as a series of occult-themed sacrifices and abductions quickly evolved into a high-stakes power struggle for control of the company, eventually merging with the very corporate authority it originally sought to overthrow.

The Ministry of Darkness emerged in October 1998 after Paul Bearer reunited with his son, The Undertaker. The stable was designed by Mark Calaway to preserve his character's mystique, featuring a rotating cast of acolytes including The Acolytes, Mideon, and The Brood. The group’s storylines were defined by extreme, ritualistic behavior, such as abducting wrestlers, performing mock crucifixions, and attempting to embalm rivals alive. These theatrical displays of power were intended to signal a new era of dominance over the WWF.

The narrative shifted from supernatural horror to corporate intrigue as the Ministry aimed to oust owner Vince McMahon. The Undertaker claimed to be acting under the orders of a mysterious 'higher power,' a plot that culminated in the abduction of Stephanie McMahon and a failed 'Black Wedding' ceremony. The tension reached a breaking point when the Ministry merged with McMahon's own faction, The Corporation, to form the Corporate Ministry. This alliance was short-lived, however, as the 'Greater Power' was revealed to be Vince McMahon himself on the June 7, 1999, episode of Raw is War.

The legacy of the Ministry persisted long after its dissolution in late 1999. Elements of the stable's imagery resurfaced in 2004 during a feud between The Undertaker and JBL, and again in 2022 when Edge formed The Judgment Day, a stable that drew thematic inspiration from the original group. Despite its controversial nature, the Ministry remains a defining example of the Attitude Era's willingness to blend dark, gothic storytelling with the shifting power dynamics of professional wrestling management.
