The British secret agent who weaponizes the heat of the sun against supernatural threats.
In short: Created by Warren Ellis, Pete Wisdom is a cynical intelligence operative who trades traditional espionage for high-stakes battles against vampires and dark magic. Armed with the ability to project thermal energy as lethal hot knives, this complex mutant navigates the intersection of British black-ops and the bizarre, occult underworld.
Pete Wisdom first appeared in Marvel Comics' Excalibur #86 in February 1995. Originally conceived by Warren Ellis for a pitch titled Electric Angel, the character was designed as an angry young man from Essex, inspired by the gritty television detective Jack Regan. Within the Marvel Universe, Wisdom is a British secret agent whose mutant physiology allows him to absorb solar radiation and ambient heat, which he then discharges from his fingertips as projectiles or claws. These energy blades are described as reaching temperatures comparable to the surface of the sun, making him a formidable combatant in both physical and tactical espionage.
His career is defined by his service to covert organizations like Black Air and MI-13. Wisdom’s life is marked by profound personal tragedy, including the death of his mother at the hands of a serial killer and the necessity of killing his own romantic partner, Maureen Raven, to halt a Martian invasion of Britain. These experiences have left him deeply cynical, yet he remains a central figure in defending the United Kingdom from supernatural incursions. His tactical brilliance was notably displayed during the war against Count Dracula, where he orchestrated a complex ruse involving misinformation and magical traps to neutralize the vampire army.
Beyond the comics, Wisdom has transitioned into film, portrayed by Rob Delaney in Deadpool 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. While his comic book iterations span various alternate realities—including a version that became the Leader in the Ultimate Marvel series—his core identity remains that of a reluctant, battle-hardened operative. Whether he is leading X-Force or navigating the political intricacies of Otherworld, Wisdom embodies a blend of classic spy tropes and high-concept fantasy, proving that even in a world of superheroes, the most dangerous weapon is often a man who has nothing left to lose.
