In short: Before leading professional clubs through promotion battles and relegation scares, Pete Wild worked as a tree surgeon and car mechanic apprentice. His journey from a lifelong Oldham Athletic supporter to a high-stakes football coach is a remarkable study in professional reinvention and the volatility of the beautiful game.

Born in Royton on 20 July 1984, Pete Wild’s path to the dugout was far from linear. A devoted Oldham Athletic fan since his first match on New Year's Day 1991, Wild spent his early years working various roles, including stints as an apprentice car mechanic, a tree surgeon, and helping in his parents' pubs. His transition into football began at 18, moving through roles as a development officer for the Manchester FA and coaching within the Oldham Council sports department. He even spent three years, from 2012 to 2015, leading the England Amputee football team.

Wild’s managerial career is defined by sudden peaks and intense pressures. He first rose to prominence as Oldham's caretaker manager in late 2018, famously guiding the club to an FA Cup victory against Premier League side Fulham in January 2019. However, the highs were often met with rapid shifts in fortune. After a brief period as permanent manager, he moved through several clubs, including FC Halifax Town and Barrow. At Barrow, he achieved significant success, earning EFL League Two Manager of the Month honors in both November 2023 and March 2024, and helping the club climb into promotion contention.

The latter part of his career has been marked by the cyclical nature of football management. After a period with Fleetwood Town and an interim spell at Tranmere Rovers—where he secured safety from relegation despite a difficult run of only one win in ten games—Wild took charge of Hartlepool United in October 2026. His tenure there began with a loss to Tamworth, part of a difficult run of nine defeats in ten matches that left the club struggling in the relegation zone. His career remains a testament to the relentless, often unpredictable, nature of the professional coaching circuit.
