The cinematic tragedy of a stolen bike and a broken life
In short: For Prabhu, a black Bajaj Pulsar was more than transportation; it was his ticket to respect, employment, and love. But when the bike is stolen by the underworld, his life spirals into a violent cycle of revenge that leaves his family permanently scarred.
Directed by Vetrimaaran in his 2007 debut, Polladhavan (Ruthless Man) explores the devastating ripple effects of a single theft. The protagonist, Prabhu, is a middle-class man who secures a bank job and social standing primarily because he owns a motorcycle. When the bike is stolen by a petty thief linked to a smuggling don named Selvam, the loss triggers a series of escalating conflicts with the North Chennai underworld. The narrative takes a dark turn when Prabhu's father is attacked by the smugglers, resulting in his permanent paralysis. This tragedy shifts the film from a personal quest for property into a desperate mission of protection and retribution. The conflict is further complicated by Selvam’s younger brother, Ravi, who smuggles drugs using the stolen bike.
The story reaches a climax when Ravi orchestrates the murder of Selvam, leading to a final confrontation where Prabhu must eliminate Ravi to ensure his family's safety. Beyond the action, the film is noted for its realistic portrayal of middle-class life and its stylistic nods to Vetrimaaran’s mentor, Balu Mahendra. Interestingly, the script was inspired by the real-life experiences of the director's friend, Andrew, who faced various hardships while trying to track down his lost bike. Despite being compared to 'Bicycle Thieves,' Vetrimaaran explicitly dismissed the comparison, asserting that the film's narrative scale and scope were entirely distinct.
The film was a significant success for its debutant director, earning four Vijay Awards including Best Director. Its impact was wide enough to warrant remakes in Telugu (Kurradu), Kannada (Punda), Bengali (Borbaad), Sinhala (Pravegeya), and Hindi (Guns of Banaras) over the following decade.
