In short: The 2022 film Virata Parvam blends romantic drama with the volatile history of the 1990s Naxalite movement. While the narrative is largely fictional, it draws deep inspiration from the life of a young girl who vanished after joining an armed insurgency, offering a somber meditation on idealism, betrayal, and political violence.

Directed by Venu Udugula, Virata Parvam explores the intersection of personal obsession and political radicalization. The protagonist, Vennela, is a young woman who becomes infatuated with the writings of a Naxal leader named Ravi Shankar. Her journey leads her to abandon her conventional life, eventually joining the forest-based insurgency. The film’s title references the fourth book of the Mahabharata, chosen by Udugula to reflect themes of conspiracy, love, and vendetta that permeate the story.

The character of Vennela is rooted in the true story of Thumu Sarala, a sixteen-year-old from the Warangal district. In 1992, Sarala left her education to enlist with the Peoples War Group. Tragically, her involvement was short-lived; she was killed by the very group she joined just one month later under circumstances that remain shrouded in mystery. Udugula, who witnessed similar events during his own upbringing in Warangal, sought to translate this historical trauma into a cinematic experience, emphasizing the complex politics that defined the era.

Despite receiving critical acclaim for its performances and musical score, the film faced significant commercial challenges. With a production budget of 50 crore, it struggled at the box office, grossing only 12 crore worldwide. Critics noted that while the film is not a conventional entertainer, its emotional weight and the lead performance by Sai Pallavi leave a lasting impression. The production itself was a lengthy endeavor, spanning from July 2019 to December 2020, with filming locations ranging from the forests of Telangana to Kerala. Ultimately, the film serves as both a tribute to the historical figures who inspired it and a reflection on the destructive nature of ideological conflict.
