Beyond survival: redefining Native American identity through the lens of survivance

Postindian Warrior: Creating a New Consciousness in Native America · 8:14 · Video: Penn Museum · Watch at the source

In short: This video explores the concept of the 'Postindian,' a framework developed by Anishinaabe writer Gerald Vizenor to reject narratives of Native American absence and focus on active, contemporary presence.

Part of the Penn Museum's Native American Voices Video project, these films examine how contemporary Native America is defined by movement and change. The series features insights from Tlingit artists Nicholas Galanin and Clarissa Rizal, alongside the influential theories of Gerald Vizenor. Vizenor's work emphasizes 'survivance' to counter historical depictions of domination.

The project, completed in 2011, consists of five 8-minute films designed for the 'Native American Voices: The People - Here and Now' exhibition.
