In short: Ratko Mladić, the military commander responsible for the siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre, remained a fugitive for over a decade. Despite international warrants, a multi-million dollar bounty, and intense pressure from the European Union, he successfully hid in plain sight, protected by security forces and his own family.

Ratko Mladić rose through the ranks of the Yugoslav People's Army before becoming the chief of staff for the Army of Republika Srpska during the Bosnian War. In 1995, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia issued warrants for his arrest, citing his command responsibility for atrocities including genocide and crimes against humanity. Despite these charges, Mladić lived as a fugitive, reportedly moving between military facilities, private apartments, and even his own wartime bunkers.

His ability to avoid capture became a major geopolitical hurdle. The European Union made his arrest a prerequisite for Serbia’s membership candidacy, yet domestic support for Mladić remained high. Polls from the era suggested that a significant portion of the Serbian population viewed him as a hero, and many were unwilling to report his location even for substantial financial rewards. This public sentiment, combined with protection from elements within the security services, allowed him to evade NATO commandos and international investigators for nearly sixteen years.

The search finally ended in 2011 when authorities apprehended him at a relative's home in Lazarevo. Following his extradition to The Hague, a lengthy legal process culminated in a 2017 conviction on ten charges, including genocide, resulting in a life sentence. Throughout his time in custody, Mladić faced declining health, including strokes and heart issues, while his legal team repeatedly challenged the proceedings. His eventual capture marked the conclusion of one of the most high-profile manhunts in the history of international criminal justice.
