In short: Robert Blake, a man with no prior naval experience, transformed England's small fleet into a global powerhouse. He pioneered the single-line battle formation, winter sea patrols, and the first naval courts-martial. Yet, after the Stuart Restoration, deliberate efforts to purge Parliamentarian history left this naval titan largely forgotten by time.

Born in 1598, Robert Blake was an unlikely candidate for naval greatness. A scholar who failed to secure a fellowship at Oxford due to his political views and stature, he spent his early years in trade and local politics. His military career began during the English Civil War, where his strategic defense of Taunton earned him national fame. By 1649, despite his lack of maritime experience, the Commonwealth government appointed him a General at Sea to combat Royalist naval threats.

Blake’s impact on naval doctrine was profound. In 1653, he authored the Fighting Instructions, which introduced the single-line ahead battle formation—a tactic that would define the Age of Sail. He was also the first to maintain a fleet at sea throughout the winter and successfully neutralize shore batteries without landing troops, a feat he achieved at Porto Farina in 1655. His leadership during the First Anglo-Dutch War and the Anglo-Spanish War established the foundation of England's long-standing naval supremacy.

Despite these achievements, Blake’s legacy suffered under the monarchy. Following the 1660 Restoration, Charles II ordered his body exhumed from Westminster Abbey and reburied in a common grave. While biographers like David Hannay have argued that Blake’s successes were never excelled—not even by Nelson—his role as a Parliamentarian made him a target for historical erasure. Today, he is increasingly recognized as the 'Father of the Royal Navy,' a figure whose tactical innovations and commitment to national service over personal profit fundamentally reshaped maritime warfare.
