Local heritage elements drive community support for tourism development in Jugra
In short: A survey of 392 local residents in Jugra, Malaysia, found that unique cultural and natural heritage elements positively influence their willingness to accept and fund tourism development. Even those who had never visited the local heritage sites expressed a sense of pride and a desire to see the area developed for archaeo-tourism and eco-tourism.
The study highlights how physical, economic, and social valuations of heritage sites contribute to a community's sense of identity. By understanding these local perspectives, researchers aim to show how residents can act as key stakeholders in sustainable tourism growth.
Researchers used a quantitative survey approach and cross-tabulation analysis to reach these conclusions. Because this was a survey-based study, the findings reflect the perceptions and reported attitudes of the participants rather than direct physical measurements.
Why it matters: Local community identity and heritage valuation are crucial for the success of sustainable tourism development.
