Tracing the global journey of steel from production to finished products
In short: Researchers have developed a new map that tracks the global movement of steel, following its path from initial production through various manufacturing stages to the creation of final goods. This study highlights the massive scale of the industry, noting that global demand has reached 1.4 billion tonnes annually and is projected to at least double by 2050.
By mapping the entire supply chain, the researchers aim to identify the most significant stages of steel flow. This visibility is intended to help pinpoint where improvements in material and energy efficiency can most effectively reduce the industry's massive carbon footprint, which currently accounts for nearly 10% of global energy-related CO2 emissions.
Why it matters: Mapping the entire steel supply chain is a vital step in identifying where to target efficiency improvements to meet climate goals.
