In short: Before defining the sound of the New York punk scene with Television, Richard Lloyd was a high school rebel. He famously replaced his schoolbooks with a hardshell guitar case, claiming the instrument was his only true textbook, a philosophy that would eventually shape the history of rock and roll.

Richard Lloyd’s path to rock stardom was defined by a refusal to follow traditional academic routes. While attending Stuyvesant High School in New York City, he decided in the 11th grade that his future lay in music rather than diplomas. He famously stopped bringing textbooks to class, instead carrying an electric guitar in a hardshell case. When teachers questioned the lack of books, Lloyd insisted the guitar was his only necessary study material. He eventually quit school in May 1969, believing a high school diploma offered no value to his musical ambitions.

His early years were spent in the orbit of legends. In his teens, he studied drums under William Kessler, a ghostwriter for big-band drummer Cozy Cole. He later transitioned to guitar, practicing alongside his friend Velvert Turner, who was a protégé of Jimi Hendrix. This connection provided Lloyd with a direct link to the era's most influential figures; he spent much of his youth attending shows by the likes of Led Zeppelin, The Who, and the Grateful Dead.

Lloyd’s most enduring legacy began in 1973, when he helped form the band Television. After meeting Tom Miller—whom Lloyd believed possessed a specific musical spark—the group rehearsed intensely for five to six hours a day throughout the fall and winter of 1973. They became a cornerstone of the burgeoning CBGB scene in New York, a club that transitioned from a venue for country and blues to a hub for punk icons like the Ramones and Talking Heads. His 1977 debut with the band, Marquee Moon, remains a seminal masterpiece of the genre.
