From futsal courts to a €27 million transfer: the rise of Richard Ríos
In short: He arrived in Brazil with nothing but a backpack and a dream. Once a futsal specialist with no experience in eleven-a-side football, Richard Ríos has transformed from a young player eating at his coach's house into one of the most expensive signings in Benfica's history.
Richard Ríos's journey is defined by a rapid transition between disciplines. Before conquering the football pitch, Ríos was a professional futsal player, representing Colombia at the under-20 level. His technical foundation in the smaller-court game—characterized by close control and dribbling in tight spaces—became his trademark as a box-to-box midfielder. This skill set allowed him to lead the 2024 Copa América in completed dribbles, outperforming every other player in the tournament.
The path was not without significant setbacks. After moving to join Flamengo's youth ranks in 2019, a loan spell with Mazatlán in 2021 was derailed by a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. Ríos has described this period of injury and subsequent uncertainty as the most humiliating time of his life. However, he rebuilt his career through stints at Guarani and Palmeiras, where he became a vital component of a championship-winning side, eventually attracting interest from major European clubs.
By July 2025, Ríos achieved a milestone, joining Benfica for a €27 million fee—the highest fixed fee the Portuguese club had ever paid for a player. His impact was immediate, winning the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira on his debut. While his passing has occasionally been described as inconsistent, his physical power and ability to handle pressure under managers like José Mourinho have cemented his status as a premier international talent, representing Colombia on the world stage.
