In short: From a Dominican prospect to a Major League superstar, Robinson Canó’s career was a whirlwind of historic milestones, massive contracts, and sudden controversy. He dominated the 2010s with incredible hitting statistics, yet his legacy remains complicated by high-profile suspensions for performance-enhancing drugs.

Born in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic, on October 22, 1982, Robinson Canó entered professional baseball as an amateur free agent with the New York Yankees in 2001. His rise was meteoric; by 2003, he was considered a top prospect, and by 2005, he had made his Major League debut. Between 2005 and 2013, his time with the Yankees saw him reach iconic heights, securing a 2009 World Series title and joining Derek Jeter as the inaugural middle infield pair in MLB to each amass 200 hits within one campaign.

Canó’s statistical dominance during the 2010s was staggering. During the 2010s, no Major League hitter recorded more doubles (363), hits (1,695), or total bases (2,801) than he did. His accolades include eight All-Star selections, five Silver Slugger Awards, and two Gold Glove Awards. He also achieved rare feats, such as winning the 2011 Home Run Derby and becoming one of only four players to win both a World Series and a World Baseball Classic.

However, his career was not without significant setbacks. In 2018, Canó served an 80-game suspension after testing positive for furosemide, a violation of the league's drug agreement. In 2021, he faced a much harsher penalty: a suspension for the entire season after testing positive for stanozolol. Despite these controversies, his impact on the game remains undeniable, marked by a massive 10-year, $240 million contract with the Seattle Mariners signed in December 2013.
