In short: In June 2023, Domingo Germán achieved baseball immortality by throwing the 24th perfect game in MLB history. Yet, his career has been marked by extreme highs and profound personal turbulence, including lengthy suspensions for domestic violence allegations and struggles with alcohol, leading to a complex legacy in professional baseball.

Born in San Pedro de Macorís in 1992, Domingo Germán’s path to the major leagues began as an international free agent signed by the Florida Marlins in 2009. After being traded to the New York Yankees in 2014 and overcoming Tommy John surgery, he debuted in 2017. By 2018, he had already set a record as the first pitcher in MLB history to strike out nine or more batters while allowing zero hits in his first career start.

Germán’s tenure with the Yankees was punctuated by both on-field dominance and severe off-field controversy. In 2019, he led MLB in win-loss percentage but was placed on administrative leave following a domestic violence investigation. This resulted in an 81-game suspension under the league’s personal conduct policy, the harshest penalty ever issued to a player not formally charged with a crime. The incident involved a violent episode at his home while intoxicated, requiring intervention from teammates.

The pitcher’s career continued to oscillate. In 2023, he reached the pinnacle of the sport by throwing a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics, the first by a Dominican-born player. However, just over a month later, he was placed on the restricted list to undergo inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse following a clubhouse confrontation. After stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Mexican League’s Toros de Tijuana, Germán’s journey remains a stark study of the thin line between elite athletic achievement and personal instability.
