In short: Salvatore Riina, known as the Beast, shattered the Sicilian Mafia's tradition of low-profile corruption by launching a brutal, open war against the Italian state. His scorched-earth tactics, including the assassinations of high-profile prosecutors, ultimately triggered a massive government crackdown that dismantled his power and led to his life imprisonment.

Born in 1930 in Corleone, Salvatore Riina rose to lead the Corleonesi faction by the mid-1970s. Unlike his predecessors, who relied on bribery and political influence to operate in the shadows, Riina favored extreme violence. He broke established Mafia codes by targeting women, children, and innocent civilians to distract law enforcement. His dominance was cemented during the Second Mafia War, a conflict that saw up to a thousand murders as he systematically eliminated rival bosses like Stefano Bontade and Salvatore Inzerillo.

Riina's strategy of open confrontation reached a fever pitch in the early 1990s. Following the Supreme Court's confirmation of life sentences from the 1986 Maxi Trial, he ordered the 1992 assassinations of Antimafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. These brazen attacks, which involved massive car bombings, horrified the public and forced the Italian government to implement a severe, permanent crackdown. Riina was eventually captured in January 1993 after 23 years as a fugitive, thanks in part to the cooperation of his former subordinate, Balduccio Di Maggio.

The aftermath of his arrest revealed deep complexities regarding his relationship with the state. While some informants, like Giovanni Brusca, alleged that Riina engaged in secret negotiations with government officials to halt the violence, others, including General Mario Mori, denied these claims. Riina spent his final decades under the stringent 41-bis prison regime, isolated from his organization. By the time of his death in 2017, he had been sentenced to 26 life terms, leaving behind a legacy of terror that fundamentally altered the structure and public perception of the Sicilian Mafia.
