In short: From delivering milk by horse-drawn cart to presiding over the golden era of Derby County, Sam Longson’s life was a masterclass in expansion. He didn't just grow a business; he orchestrated one of the most famous managerial appointments in English football history.

Born in 1900 to a farming family near Chapel-en-le-Frith, Longson's entrepreneurial journey began under the pressure of the First World War. With his father and brothers serving in the military, he managed the family farm, initially using horse-drawn carts for milk and gunpowder deliveries. His transition to a Ford Model T allowed him to expand into mail and building supplies, eventually establishing a road haulage firm that became the largest in Derbyshire.

Longson’s business acumen extended to various sectors, including quarrying, housebuilding, and even pioneering raspberry cultivation in Derbyshire. However, his most enduring legacy remains his leadership at Derby County F.C. After joining the board in 1955, he became chairman in December 1965. In a move that changed the club's trajectory, he appointed Brian Clough as manager in May 1967, providing a £5,000 salary and £70,000 for transfers.

The relationship between the chairman and the manager was a volatile saga of triumph and tension. While Clough led the club to league titles in 1972 and 1975 (under Longson's successor, Dave Mackay), the pair eventually clashed over Clough's media presence and unauthorized transfer fees, such as the £250,000 signing of David Nish. The partnership ended abruptly in 1973 when Longson accepted Clough's resignation. Despite the drama, Longson remained a central figure in the club's history, serving as president and receiving an OBE in the 1977 New Year Honours.
