The elusive master of both feet and the art of the clearance
In short: Known as 'the Extractor' for his ability to win ball from the middle, Sam Mitchell redefined AFL midfield play. Beyond his physical prowess, he possessed a rare, ambidextrous skill set that left opponents guessing, eventually transforming from a decorated premiership player into a high-stakes senior coach.
Sam Mitchell's career was defined by a unique technical versatility. While some speculated he transitioned from a left-footer to a right-footer during his junior years, Mitchell maintained that he simply used whichever foot the situation demanded, switching to his left for longer kicks. This ambidexterity extended to his handpassing, which was equally proficient with either hand.
His playing style was characterized by high-volume disposals and an uncanny ability to navigate the ground. In 2015, he reached a statistical peak, averaging 31.2 disposals per game—the highest in the AFL that year—and recording a record-breaking 137 disposals across four finals matches. This era saw him secure his third All-Australian selection and contribute to a string of Hawthorn premierships in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
However, his reputation was not without controversy. Mitchell faced scrutiny for several kneeing incidents involving players like Nathan Fyfe and Taylor Walker, and even the Brisbane club expressed concerns regarding his conduct toward opponents as early as 2008. Despite these disciplinary hurdles, his individual accolades were immense, including five Peter Crimmin Medal wins and a retrospective 2012 Brownlow Medal, awarded after the disqualification of Jobe Watson.
After retiring from the West Coast Eagles in 2017, Mitchell transitioned into coaching. Following stints as an assistant and head of development, he took over as Hawthorn's senior coach in 2021. After navigating difficult rebuilding seasons in 2022 and 2023, he led the Hawks back to the finals in 2024.
