How a 19th-century actress invented the modern art of the celebrity brand
In short: Before social media influencers, there was Sarah Bernhardt. A master of marketing and myth-making, she used the press to turn her personal life into a global spectacle, proving that being a star is as much about managing the media as it is about performing on stage.
Born Henriette Rosine Bernard in October 1844, the woman who would become 'The Divine Sarah' was far more than a talented tragedienne. While she rose to prominence through performances like François Coppelle’s Le Passant in 1869, her true genius lay in her ability to manipulate the public's perception. She understood that a modern star exists in a constant dialogue with a powerful public and the media, a concept that transformed her from a mere actress into a global icon.
Bernhardt’s brand was built on defiance and calculated provocation. By adopting masculine parts like Hamlet in 1899, she defied gender norms; she also wore trousers despite legal prohibitions for women, driven by a desire for more complex characters than typical female roles offered. Her personal life was equally much a part of her publicity; she embraced the status of a single mother and even once posed for a photograph while sleeping in a coffin.
Her empire extended far beyond the theater. A true businesswoman, she capitalized on her fame through advertising campaigns and branded merchandise. Her reach was immense, touring five continents and attracting the attention of literary giants like Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain. By the time she passed away in March 1923 at the age of 78, she had left behind a legacy as a fashion icon, sculptor, and director, having mastered the mechanics of fame long before the digital age.
