The legendary athlete who fought in two World Wars and conquered the Alps
In short: Marie Marvingt was far more than a mere competitor. An aviator, mountaineer, and surgical nurse, her life spanned a century of extreme adventure. From disguising herself as a man to serve in WWI to joining the French Resistance in WWII, she earned the moniker 'The Fiancée of Danger.'
Born in 1875, Marie Félicie Élisont Marvingt lived a life of unparalleled versatility. Her athletic repertoire included everything from swimming and gymnastics to speed skating, luge, and bobsledding. She achieved a historic milestone as the first woman to scale the highest peaks in the French Alps. However, her ambitions often met the era's gender barriers; in 1908, she was barred from participating in the Tour de France simply because she was a woman.
Marvingt’s bravery extended into the cockpit and the battlefield. In an era when female aviation was largely unknown, she competed for the prestigious Femina Cup—an award for the longest flight in time and distance without landing. While technical difficulties prevented her from winning the 2,000-franc prize, which went to Belgian aviator Hélène Dutrieu, Marvingt's exploits in the air were matched by her service on the front lines of World War I, where she famously fought in disguise.
Her contributions to France were recognized with over 34 decorations, including the Légion d'Honneur (attaining Chevalier in 1935 and Officier in 1949), the Croix de Guerre, and the Médaille de la Résistance. Beyond her physical feats, she was a lifelong journalist writing under the pseudonym Myriel and appeared in films such as 1934's Les Ailes qui Sauvent. Today, her legacy is preserved through French streets, schools, and a commemorative plaque at her childhood home in Nancy.
