In short: As North Vietnamese forces closed in on Saigon, a massive evacuation began to rescue war orphans. Known as Operation Babylift, this mission aimed to transport children to new lives in America and beyond, but the operation was marred by tragedy, poor planning, and deep ethical debates.

As the Vietnam War neared its end, the U.S. administration initiated Operation Babylift. This mission aimed to relocate Vietnamese youngsters for adoption by families across America, Canada, Europe, and Australia. The mission was driven by desperation; as Communist forces advanced, South Vietnamese citizens feared for their children's lives. Many mothers, such as Mai Thi Kim, feared their mixed-race children would face extreme violence if left behind. This exodus was fueled by widespread rumours regarding the potential fate of those left behind. South Vietnamese citizens felt increasingly desperate to escape the advancing Communist forces.

The operation was plagued by logistical failures and tragedy from the start. On April 4, 1975, the very first flight out of Saigon crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in the deaths of 138 people, the majority of whom were Vietnamese children. A subsequent Congressional investigation pointed to a total lack of coordination between federal and private agencies regarding the evacuation. The initial disaster occurred just minutes after the plane departed from the airfield. This failure highlighted the severe lack of preparation by both private and federal organisations.

Beyond the logistical chaos, the mission sparked intense political debate. Critics questioned the Ford administration's motivations, with some viewing the evacuation as a way to influence public opinion in favor of the Republic of Vietnam. Others raised ethical concerns about whether children were being taken from their homeland under the guise of fear. Most disturbingly, it was discovered that many of the children being evacuated were not actually orphans, complicating the humanitarian justification for the massive undertaking. Ambassador Graham Martin even suggested the programme could shift American sentiment towards the Republic of Vietnam. President Gerald Ford used the arrival of the flights for televised photo opportunities.
