In short: Between 1500 and 1700, a radical shift in thought transformed how humanity understands nature. By abandoning the qualitative, Aristotelian search for final causes in favor of a quantitative, mechanical view, early scientists established a new method of inquiry that eventually eclipsed both traditional philosophy and established religious authority.

The Scientific Revolution marked a departure from the Greek view of nature that had persisted for nearly 2,000 years. This transition involved a fundamental reeducation of common sense, prioritizing abstract reasoning and the experimental method. Rather than asking why things occurred, thinkers began to focus on how they functioned, treating the natural world as a machine rather than an organism. This period fostered a new, utilitarian approach to knowledge, where science emerged as an autonomous discipline distinct from technology and philosophy.

Central to this transformation was the development of new institutional structures designed to validate discoveries. As the volume of information grew, the traditional practice of publishing in expensive, inaccessible books became obsolete. Instead, scientific societies emerged, such as the Royal Society of London, chartered in 1662, and the Académie des Sciences in Paris, formed in 1666. These organizations provided a forum for natural philosophers to share findings, devise new canons for reporting, and subject results to independent, critical confirmation.

The revolution began in astronomy with Nicolaus Copernicus, whose 1543 work, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium libri VI, challenged the geocentric system. By placing the Sun at the center of the universe, Copernicus sought to satisfy the need for a system with greater unity and harmony. While his heliocentric hypothesis faced initial skepticism, the mathematical techniques within his book became indispensable to professional astronomers. This shift toward universal comprehensibility and reproducible data eventually allowed science to replace Christianity as the focal point of European civilization.
