In short: Born with microcephaly, Schlitzie spent decades as a sideshow star, performing for audiences across the globe. Though his true identity remains lost to history, his image became a permanent fixture of pop culture, inspiring everything from punk rock anthems to graphic novels and cult classic cinema.

Schlitzie, legally known as Shlitze Surtees, was a sideshow performer whose life was defined by the informal, shifting guardianships of the carnival circuit. Born in 1901 with microcephaly—a condition causing a small head, short stature, and severe intellectual disability—he was often presented under exploitative monikers like the 'Last of the Aztecs'. Despite his cognitive limitations, which were comparable to those of a three-year-old, he was described as an exuberant, sociable individual who thrived on the attention of his audience.

His career spanned decades, featuring appearances in major circuses like Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. He is perhaps best remembered for his role in Tod Browning’s 1932 horror film Freaks. The movie, which featured genuine sideshow performers, was a financial failure upon release and was banned in the United Kingdom for thirty years. However, its rediscovery in the 1960s transformed it into a midnight movie cult classic, eventually earning selection by the National Film Registry in 1994 for its cultural significance.

Schlitzie’s later years were spent in Los Angeles, where he continued to perform and sell souvenir pictures. After the death of his long-time guardian George Surtees in 1965, he briefly faced institutionalization before returning to the sideshow circuit. He passed away in 1971 at the age of 70. Today, his legacy persists through various media, including Bill Griffith’s graphic novel Nobody's Fool, the Ramones' song 'Pinhead', and even character models in modern video games like Red Dead Redemption 2.
