In short: Born into poverty after his father’s death, Red Skelton traded school for the stage at age ten. He rose from traveling medicine shows to become a titan of American comedy, eventually finding a second, highly lucrative career as a painter of the very clowns he spent his life portraying.

Red Skelton was born in Vincennes, Indiana, in 1913, just two months after his father—a former circus clown—passed away. Facing extreme financial hardship, Skelton began working as a newsboy by age seven. By ten, he had joined a traveling medicine show, a move that effectively ended his formal education. This early exposure to the road, followed by stints in burlesque, vaudeville, and on riverboats, forged a performer who could blend broad, physical humor with deep emotional resonance.

His transition to national prominence began in radio, where he was voted the outstanding new star of 1941. This success propelled him into a prolific film career, with credits in roughly 30 movies, including 1944's Bathing Beauty. However, he is best remembered for The Red Skelton Show, which debuted on NBC in 1951. The program became a television staple, moving to CBS in 1953 and running until 1970. Skelton famously re-created a stable of beloved characters, such as the Mean Widdle Kid and Clem Kaddiddlehopper, which he had refined over decades of live performance.

In his later years, Skelton pursued a parallel career as a painter, focusing primarily on clown imagery. What began as a hobby in 1964, encouraged by his wife Georgia, evolved into a massive commercial success. By the time of his death in 1997, his art dealer estimated that Skelton had earned more money from his paintings than from his decades of television work, with lithograph sales alone generating roughly $2.5 million annually. Skelton viewed his entire life's work as a singular mission: to make people laugh, defining the role of a clown as the ultimate mastery of all performance arts.
