In short: Ancient Greek historians described a king named Sesostris who led armies from Egypt into the heart of Europe. But was he a real conqueror, or a magnificent composite of several different Egyptian pharaohs blended into a single mythic hero?

According to the historian Herodotus, Sesostlar led a massive military expedition from Egypt through Asia Minor and into Europe, defeating the Scythians and Thracians in areas that likely correspond to modern Bulgaria and Romania. The tales, passed down via Egyptian priests, even claimed he left colonists at the river Phasis in Colchis. Other ancient writers added to the legend: Strabo suggested he sent armies to Iberia, while Diodorus claimed he conquered Arabia and organized the regulations for military campaigns.

However, modern scholars view 'Sesostris' as a legendary figure rather than a single historical person. The name is widely considered a Greek corruption of names like Senusret or Senwosret. Professor Alan Lloyd notes that the narrative likely stems from an Egyptian tradition presenting an ideal model of kingship, which was later contaminated by folklore and Greek perspectives. The legendary king may actually be a 'highly magnified portrait' of the historical Senusret III, potentially conflated with other powerful rulers like Shoshenq I or Ramesses II.

The stories surrounding Sesostris are as much about culture as they are about war. He was said to have established a caste system and even attempted to build a canal to the Red Sea, though he stopped when he realized the sea level was higher than the land. Whether he was a real conqueror or a literary invention, his legend was so potent that Alexander the Great was later described in the Alexander Romance as 'the new Sesostris, ruler of the world.'
