From the final pick of a shortened draft to Major League stardom
In short: In 2020, the MLB draft was cut short by a global pandemic, leaving Shay Whitcomb as the very last player selected. Since that moment, the infielder has navigated the grueling minor league grind to reach the highest level of professional baseball.
Shay Whitcomb's professional journey began under unusual circumstances. Selected during the 2020 MLB draft's fifth round by the Houston Astros, he was the last pick in a draft notably curtailed by COVID-19. This disruption meant Whitcomb saw no professional action in 2020, as the minor league season was canceled entirely.
His ascent through the ranks was marked by consistent power and speed. In 2021, playing for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers and Asheville Tourists, he recorded 23 home runs and 30 stolen bases. He achieved personal bests of 102 RBI and 35 home runs in 2023, playing for both the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys and Corpus Christi. His performance in Sugar Land was particularly notable, as he helped the team secure its first-ever Triple-A Championship and was named the Championship MVP.
Whitcomb finally reached the Major Leagues on August 17, 2024, making his debut for the Houston Astros. Starting at third base against the Chicago White Sox, he recorded a double in his first at-bat. His rookie campaign saw him appear in 20 games, while his international career saw him represent South Korea in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, where he hit two home runs against the Czech Republic.
The infielder's career has seen frequent movement between levels. Following his August 10, 2026, designation for assignment by the Astros, the San Francisco Giants claimed him via waivers on August 13, 2026, in a major career shift.
