The man behind the most famous scream in Hollywood history was a rodeo cowboy
In short: Sheb Wooley was a prolific actor and country musician, but his most enduring legacy is a sound effect. He is widely credited with recording the Wilhelm scream, a piercing vocal performance that has appeared in over 200 films since he first performed it for a 1951 adventure movie.
Born in 1921 in Erick, Oklahoma, Shelby Fredrick Wooley lived a life defined by versatility. Before finding fame in Hollywood, he was a working cowboy and rodeo rider. His early musical career began at age 15 with the Plainview Melody Boys, and by the 1940s, he was recording music and working as a welder. His transition to acting in the 1950s led to roles in iconic Westerns like High Noon and the television series Rawhide, where he played scout Pete Nolan.
Wooley’s career was marked by a unique ability to blend genres and personas. He achieved massive success with the 1958 novelty hit The Purple People Eater, which utilized tape manipulation techniques. He also performed under the pseudonym Ben Colder, a character portrayed as a drunken country songwriter. This persona allowed him to release parodies, including Shaky Breaky Car and a version of D.I.V.O.R.C.E. that gained international recognition after being covered by Billy Connolly in 1975.
Beyond his public performances, Wooley left an indelible mark on cinema through his sound work. His widow, Linda Dotson, confirmed that he provided the Wilhelm scream, a stock sound effect he originally recorded for the 1951 film Distant Drums. Throughout his life, he received numerous accolades, including the Country Music Association's Comedian of the Year in 1968 and the 1992 Songwriter of the Year award. Wooley continued to create until the very end, recording his final song just four days before his death from leukemia in 2003 at age 82.
