In short: Today, the shortstop is a premier athlete at the top of the lineup. But the role began as a defensive specialist meant to catch light, erratic throws from the outfield. From its origins as a 'short fielder' to its status as baseball's most agile defender, the evolution of the position is fascinating.

In the mid-19th century, the shortstop did not exist as an infielder. During the first five years of the Knickerbockers, teams fielded between eight and eleven players, with the only infielders covering the bases. Because early baseballs were lightweight and difficult to throw, Doc Adams created a position between 1849 and 1850 to field outfield throws and relay them to the infield. This 'short fielder' acted more like a fourth outfielder than a modern infielder.

As ball quality improved and distances increased, the role migrated into the infield. While Dickey Pearce of the Brooklyn Atlantics is credited with playing the position in its modern form, the role has undergone a massive tactical shift. Historically, shortstops were often defensive specialists with poor batting averages—so much so that Mario Mendoza's sub-.200 average led to the term 'Mendoza Line.' However, since the 1960s, the role has evolved into a dual-threat position requiring elite hitting alongside exceptional agility.

The modern shortstop is assigned the number 6 by scorers and faces unique physical demands. They must possess a strong arm to manage the infield's longest and most difficult throw to first base, and extreme agility to handle high-velocity ground balls. Because right-handed hitters tend to pull the ball toward third base, the shortstop must constantly adjust their positioning, moving closer to third for righties and toward first for lefties. This complexity makes it one of the most difficult positions to fill in professional baseball.
