In short: In October 2006, a single track achieved the highest jump on the Billboard Hot 100 at the time. Born from an unexpected meeting in a Detroit recording studio, Akon and Eminem’s collaboration bypassed the slow climb of typical hits to dominate global charts.

The collaboration between Senegalese-American singer Akon and American rapper Eminem was an accidental byproduct of a recording session for Obie Trice. While Akon was working on the track 'Snitch' with the Shady Records artist, the two musicians formed a friendship. Despite Eminem's reputation for being selective about guest appearances, he eventually called Akon to confirm his participation, prompting Akon to fly to Detroit to finalize the track.

Produced and programmed by Eminem, the song was a technical feat of studio work. Alongside writers Mike Strange and Luis Rest and Resto, the track was recorded and mixed at 54 Sound in Detroit, Michigan. The song's commercial trajectory was unprecedented; after debuting at number 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 7, 2006, it surged 88 spots to number 7 just one week later, driven by 67,000 digital downloads and a massive radio audience of 30.5 million.

While the song faced some critical skepticism—with some reviewers calling the production 'prosaic' or noting Eminem's lower vocal register was 'not totally successful'—its global impact was undeniable. It reached number one on ten different record charts and achieved significant longevity, remaining at number two on the Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks. By April 2012, the single had surpassed 3,227,000 downloads in the United States alone, earning a triple-platinum certification.

The song's visual identity was equally impactful, featuring a music video directed by Benny Boom that reimagined the 1982 film '48 Hrs.' The video notably marked the first appearance of Eminem's 'PROOF' tattoo, a tribute to his late friend DeShaun Dupree Holton. As of February 2023, the music video has amassed over one billion views on YouTube.
