How a 30-minute jam session became a global hip-hop anthem
In short: In the summer of 2001, Eminem, Jeff Bass, and Steve King sat down for a late-night recording session. Within just thirty minutes, they had composed the music for a track that would eventually dominate international charts and become a defining moment in 21st-century pop culture.
Released on April 29, 2002, "Without Me" served as the lead single for Eminem's fourth studio album, The Eminem Show. The track was designed as a high-energy sequel to "The Real Slim Shady," with lyrics that positioned the rapper as a figure returning to save the music industry. The song's creation was remarkably rapid; during a late-night session in 2001, the trio of Eminem, Jeff Bass, and engineer Steve King finished the music in approximately 30 minutes, concluding their work at 3:00 AM.
The track's composition was a collaborative effort of improvisation. Using a drum track provided by DJ Head, Jeff Bass experimented with various keyboard sounds until finding a suitable bass guitar effect. Bass then played two repeating notes that inspired Eminem to vocalize the melody, which Bass subsequently recorded on the saxophone. While the music was captured in a single night, Eminem took about three months to present the completed lyrics to Bass.
The track achieved huge global sales, peaking at number two on the U.S. It topped the charts in fifteen nations, such as Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. In the UK, it debuted at number one, selling over 165,500 copies in its first week alone. Its cultural impact was further cemented by its 2003 Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Male Rap Solo Performance, as well as its inclusion in the 2016 Suicide Squad soundtrack.
Beyond the charts, the song's lyrical content is a dense tapestry of satire. It mocks various public figures and entities, including Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne, the FCC, and artists like Moby and Limp Bizkit. It even parodies Prince's decision to use a symbol instead of a name and lampoons comparisons between Eminem and Elvis Presley regarding a white artist's success in a predominantly Black art form.
