How a human stunt-woman became a six-armed sorceress through time travel
In short: Originally a professional stunt performer known as Rita Wayword, this Marvel character underwent a horrific transformation. Captured by the villain Mojo, she was physically modified and driven insane, eventually being sent back in time to ensure her own transformation into the powerful, six-armed lieutenant known as Spiral.
The character's origin is a complex temporal loop. Originally a human stunt-woman named Rita Wayword, she followed the character Longshot into the Mojoverse. Following years of imprisonment, her spirit was broken, leading to extensive surgeries and physical modifications by Mojo and his scientist, Arize. The procedure turned her into a powerful, white-haired figure possessing six limbs, including two mechanical ones. To complete the cycle, Mojo sent the transformed Spiral back in time to serve his past self, effectively setting the chain of events that would lead to her original capture.
Beyond her physical alterations, Spiral is a formidable sorceress whose magic is often triggered through intricate dance moves or small hand gestures. Her abilities include teleportation across great distances, opening dimensional gateways, and traveling through time. She has demonstrated the power to stun, depower, or immobilize superhuman opponents, including the Avengers and Magneto. Her magical potential is significant enough that the Eye of Agamotto once identified her as a candidate for the next Sorcerer Supreme.
Spiral's role in the Marvel Universe has shifted from a minor character designed by artist Art Adams to a major adversary and occasional ally. While she began as a lieutenant for Mojo, she has also served in Mystique's Freedom Force and joined Storm's X-Force. Her history is marked by complex relationships, including a suggested former romantic connection to Longshot and a controversial role in the physical and mental transformation of Psylocke through a consciousness swap with the assassin Kwannon.
