The evolving identity of the Ms. Marvel mantle
In short: The name Ms. Marvel has belonged to several different women across Marvel Comics history. From a US Air Force officer to a teenage Pakistani-American, the mantle has been redefined through various incarnations, each gaining powers through different genetic or technological means.
The identity of Ms. Marvel has undergone significant transformations since the character first appeared in March 1968. The original bearer, Carol Danvers, was a non-superpowered US Air Force officer. Following an explosion with the Kree superhero Captain Marvel in November 1969, her DNA merged with his, granting her superpowers. She eventually assumed the mantle of Captain Marvel in July 2012 to honor the original bearer, Mar-Vell. Danvers eventually became a member of the Avengers in 1978. She also used the codenames Binary and Warbird during her career.
The mantle has been held by three other distinct characters. In December 1975, Karla Sofen debuted as the second Ms. Marvel; she later became the villain Moonstone after tricking Lloyd Bloch into giving her a meteorite. Sharon Ventura, a stunt performer, became the third incarnation in September 1985 after volunteering for a Power Broker experiment. Ventura later mutated into the 'She-Thing' following exposure to cosmic rays in January 1988. Sofen's time as the title character began in mid-2009. She eventually lost the name to Danvers in early 2010.
The current incarnation is Kamala Khan, who debuted in August 2013. Hailing from Jersey City, New Jersey, the 16-year-old Pakistani-American Khan looks up to Carol Danvers. Her solo series, which premiered in February 2014, marked a milestone as Marvel's first Muslim character to headline her own comic book. Like many bearers of the name, Khan's powers are tied to Kree technology or genetics. Khan's debut occurred in the Captain Marvel series. This character has since appeared in various animated shows and video games.
