The five-man cheerleading squad that broke professional wrestling rules
In short: In 2006, a group of five wrestlers entered the WWE as an all-male cheerleading stable. They didn't just perform stunts; they rewrote the rulebook by becoming the first team in history to be collectively recognized as World Tag Team Champions.
The Spirit Squad was born from a direct mandate by WWE chairman Vince McMahon. Originally intended to feature four wrestlers from Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), the group's lineup shifted when Elijah Burke declined the offer due to concerns over performing required acrobatics. He was replaced by Johnny Jeter and Mike Mondo, forming the final quintet: Kenny, Johnny, Mitch, Nicky, and Mikey.
Their debut on Raw in January 2006 saw them acting as hired muscle for various wrestlers before they were integrated into a high-profile feud between McMahon and Shawn Michaels. The group's most significant rule-breaking occurred in April 2006 when Kenny and Mikey won the World Tag Team Championship with help from their teammates. An "executive edict" then declared all five members as champions, utilizing the Freebird Rule to allow any two members to defend the titles at once.
The team's reign lasted 216 days, making it one of the longest in history until surpassed by a 1996-1997 record. Their tenure was defined by scripted chaos, including being named "Co-General Managers" and engaging in various handicap matches against legends like Ric Flair and Sgt. Slaughter. The group eventually disbanded in November 2006 after a losing streak led to internal friction, though members like Nicky would later find significant success under the name Dolph Ziggler.
While many of the original members were released by 2008, the Spirit Squad's legacy persists through various reunions. Kenny and Mikey have continued to team up across independent circuits and promotions like MLW and NYWC, occasionally reviving the cheerleading personas that first disrupted the tag team division.
