In short: Established in 1971, the World Tag Team Championship served as the cornerstone of professional wrestling tag team competition for nearly forty years. From its origins in the WWWF to the complex brand extensions of the 2000s, this title defined the careers of legendary teams before its eventual decommissioning in 2010.

The World Tag Team Championship was established on June 3, 1971, by the World Wide Wrestling Federation, later known as the World Wrestling Federation and eventually WWE. It replaced earlier regional titles, such as the WWWF International Tag Team Championship, to become the promotion's primary tag team prize. Luke Graham and Tarzan Tyler were the inaugural champions, setting a precedent for a title that would headline major events like In Your House 3 and Backlash.

The title's history was marked by significant corporate shifts, most notably the 2001 purchase of rival promotion World Championship Wrestling. This acquisition led to the temporary unification of titles, including a high-profile steel cage match at Survivor Series where The Dudley Boyz defeated The Hardy Boyz to unify the championships. By 2002, the introduction of the brand extension necessitated a second title for the SmackDown! brand, leading to the original championship being assigned to Raw and renamed the World Tag Team Championship to mirror the top singles titles.

Records and rivalries defined the championship's legacy. Demolition held the record for the longest single reign at 478 days, while The Dudley Boyz achieved the most reigns as a team with eight. Individually, Edge secured the record for the most reigns with 12, partnering with various wrestlers including Christian. The title's final chapter arrived in 2010 when it was unified with the newer WWE Tag Team Championship. The Hart Dynasty, consisting of David Hart Smith and Tyson Kidd, served as the final holders before the original lineage was officially decommissioned on August 16, 2010.
