How do we preserve the collective memory of those who unearthed ancient Egypt?
In short: Discover the story behind Who Was Who in Egyptology, a vital biographical archive documenting the explorers, collectors, and field workers who shaped the discipline. This lecture explores the ongoing effort to maintain this historical record and the modern push to ensure the narrative is inclusive.
Who Was Who in Egyptology serves as a comprehensive repository for the lives of individuals who contributed to the field, ranging from archaeologists to field workers. Managed by the Egypt Exploration Society, the project functions as a living disciplinary memory that is continuously updated with new entries. The current editorial focus is on broadening the scope of the archive to represent a more diverse range of contributors.
The project is currently led by Hana Navratilova, who joined as co-editor in 2022 alongside Morris Bierbrier. Navratilova, a historian and Egyptologist with experience in international research expeditions and grant-funded studies, views the online dictionary format as an essential tool for building a more complete and inclusive history of the discipline.
