The Superman of Manchester City: A career defined by resilience
In short: Before becoming a Premier League standout, Stephen Ireland faced a childhood plagued by Osgood-Schlatter disease. This chronic condition nearly derailed his path to professional football before he even reached his teens, forcing him to fight for every inch of the pitch that followed.
Born in Cork, Ireland's journey began at Cobh Ramblers, following in his father Michael's footsteps. However, his early development was hampered by Osgood-Schlatter disease, a condition that caused several British clubs to discourage him from pursuing trials during his mid-teens. Despite these physical setbacks, he secured a move to Manchester City as a 15-year-old in August 2001.
Following a rapid ascent, he received Manchester City's Senior Player of the Year award for the 2008–09 campaign. He became a key figure during the club's transition under new ownership by the Abu Dhabi United Group. However, his trajectory shifted in December 2009 when manager Roberto Mancini took over and demanded Ireland "change his head" to fit a different tactical system.
His career became a masterclass in perseverance through various clubs and setbacks. After a complex move to Aston Villa involving a £8 million part-exchange for James Milner, he navigated loan spells at Newcastle United and Stoke City. He faced significant hurdles, including a broken wrist in 2012, a deep calf cut requiring 15 stitches in 2015, and a devastating broken leg in training in 2016 that sidelined him for an entire season.
Beyond the pitch, Ireland's international career was marked by both success and friction. He scored a dramatic last-second goal against San Marino in 2007, but his senior career ended abruptly following a public row with manager Steve Staunton. His story remains one of navigating physical adversity and shifting managerial tides to maintain a professional life in the spotlight.
