From Manchester United prospect to versatile international defender
In short: Discovered by scouts at age 12, Paddy McNair transitioned from a promising midfielder to a versatile defender. After being compared to Michael Carrick during his youth, he rose through the ranks at Manchester United, eventually representing Northern Ireland on the grandest stage at UEFA Euro 2016.
Paddy McNair's professional journey began in earnest when he signed for Manchester United in 2011. Though he initially impressed scouts as a midfielder for Ballyclare Colts, youth coach Paul McGuinness converted him into a defender, a move that drew comparisons to the skilled midfielder Michael Carrick. His Premier League debut arrived in September 2014 against West Ham United, where his solid defending earned praise from manager Louis van Gaal. The manager even suggested McNair could become the next Gary Neville, potentially establishing himself as a regular for a decade.
McNair's career has been defined by versatility and resilience. While often deployed as a centre-back or right-back, he has also operated as a holding midfielder, a role Northern Ireland coach Michael O'Neill suggested might be his natural fit following a 1–1 draw against Wales in 2016. His international career includes a significant role in Northern Ireland's qualification for UEFA Euro 2016, a tournament where the team reached the Round of 16. However, his path has not been without setbacks, including a ruptured ACL in November 2015 that sidelined him for nearly 11 months.
Following his time at Old Trafford, McNair moved through several prominent clubs. He joined Sunderland in August 2016 for £5.5 million in a joint deal with Donald Love. Later, he signed with Middlesbrough in June 2018, where he was eventually named Player of the Year for the 2020–21 season. His career has since taken him to the United States with San Diego FC and back to England with West Bromwich Albion and Hull City, demonstrating a sustained presence in professional football across multiple leagues.
